An Update on Approaches to MS Differential Diagnosis, on Behalf of the ACTRIMS MS Differential Diagnosis Consortium
Chair: Andy J. Solomon, MD (University of Vermont College of Medicine)
Diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) requires careful attention to differential diagnosis – many disorders can mimic the clinical manifestations and paraclinical findings of MS. A previous collaborative effort in 2008 provided diagnostic approaches to typical clinical presentations of MS and comprehensively identified clinical, MRI, and laboratory ‘red flags’ suggestive of alternative diagnosis. This consensus paper has remained a valuable resource for medical education and clinical practice. In the past decade, there has been considerable expansion in knowledge concerning disorders in the differential diagnosis for MS. The ACTRIMS sponsored MS Differential Diagnosis Consortium effort developed expert consensus updates to recommended diagnostic approaches to MS and key clinical and paraclinical ‘red flags’ to inform the contemporary clinical evaluation of patients with suspected MS. This course will highlight recommendations from this effort. Level of Information: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced
