Shared Decision Making in DMT Selection and Maintenance: How to Fit into Practice
Chair: Colleen Harris, MN NP MSCN (University of Calgary MS Clinic)
Shared decision-making has become a well-recognized process in patient and family centered care in the field of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) particularly in the area of therapeutics. Shared decision making strategies can be useful as there exists a number of available treatment options in MS of varying efficacy, associated with differences in risks and benefits. MS is also a preference sensitive condition overall, and the shared decision making model can be helpful in assisting patients and care providers at arriving at key decisions together. In this workshop presenters will review some of the current literature, tools, and strategies to assist with shared decision making in MS treatment management, and discuss how they can be implemented at key decision points. The education and guidance of the patient and family with this process will also be discussed. In conclusion a selection of case studies will highlight some of the strategies and outcomes of shared decision making. Level of Information: Intermediate
