From Every Crisis Comes Opportunity: Managing our Mood and Burnout in Medicine

Chair: Amy Sullivan, PsyD, ABPP (Cleveland Clinic)Speaker: Carrie M Hersh, DO MSc FAAN (Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health)

In a career where we are taught how to treat illness, prolong life and functioning, and in many cases not taught how to process the stress and emotions that come with our medical practices, we invite you to attend a process oriented, story sharing, burnout combating session on managing mood and burnout as healthcare providers. For most of us, we go into medicine because we are empathetic, caring individuals that want to make a difference, and that does not stop when we become burnt out. That deep caring and empathy intensifies our emotions when medicine is hard. Often times, our inability to process our emotions, especially grief leads to burnout which is at an all-time high. Detachment is not the solution. Our inability to process these difficult emotions can lead to physical, emotional, cognitive and relational difficulties. This session will be devoted to understanding our worldview and how that contributes to how we as HCP process the emotions in medicine. This session will challenge you to process your emotions and honor your vulnerability while also seeking to normalize your feelings and to learn to grieve and then again find moments of joy in medicine and life. This space will be a place for the process of important emotions and the honoring of every life that you have healed, helped and have been a part of their journey.
