Building the Workforce of the Future: Recruitment, Retention and Succession Planning (This session was developed with support from the VA MSCoE.)

This symposium will provide an evidence-based practical approach to building and sustaining the MS workforce of the future. The first presenter will start with a general discussion of principles and guidelines for recruitment and retention of high-quality employees and for succession planning during personnel transitions. This presentation will include illustrative case examples across professions. To focus on the earlier stages of the workforce pipeline, this discussion will be followed by a presentation on developing and optimizing an MS fellowship training program, with case examples from the director of a successful joint VA and academic medical center MS fellowship, that includes both adult and pediatric MS physician training. There will then be a discussion of the needs of MS fellows by a current MS physician fellow and a recent MS psychologist fellow. This symposium will conclude with the final presentation focused on the experience and needs of MS nurses and on succession planning. Level of information: Intermediate
