Great Debate in MS Nursing: Are Digital Tools Enhancing or Eroding Patient Relationships?

Moderator/Chair: Bonnie I. Blain , RN CNN(C) MSCN
Digital health tools are rapidly reshaping how multiple sclerosis (MS) care is delivered. Telehealth visits, remote monitoring platforms, electronic patient-reported outcomes, and mobile apps now play a central role in how MS nurses, advanced practice providers, and PAs connect with patients. While these tools can expand access, improve efficiency, and support self-management, they also raise important questions about equity, workload, and the preservation of meaningful therapeutic relationships. In this interactive course, Chair Bonnie Blain will be joined by Jill Nelson and Sara Schaefer to explore the central question: Are digital tools enhancing or eroding relationship-based MS care? Faculty will review current evidence on digital health in MS, discuss real-world implementation across diverse practice settings, and examine both the benefits (access, continuity, empowerment) and risks (digital divides, depersonalization, ‘click burden’) associated with technology-enabled care. Alongside the debate, the session will provide practical, actionable strategies, including how to: • preserve therapeutic connection during virtual visits; • enhance patient and provider digital literacy; • incorporate remote monitoring and PROs without overwhelming workflow; • determine when in-person assessment is essential; • reduce documentation burden; and • tailor digital tools to support truly person-centered care. Through case examples, debate-style discussion, and audience participation, attendees will gain concrete tools to thoughtfully integrate digital technologies while safeguarding the human connection at the core of MS nursing. This course is designed for clinicians with foundational knowledge of MS who are seeking evidence-informed approaches to blending digital innovation with compassionate, relationship-based care.
