Current Topics and Trends in Rehabilitation Part 3 Wheels for Warriors: Wheelchair Considerations for the MS Patient

Moderator/Chair: Patty Bobryk , MHS,PT,MSCS,ATP
For people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), transitioning to the use of a wheelchair can be a very difficult decision to make. The task of obtaining one is even more daunting for patients and clinicians alike. Given the variable and progressive nature of MS, seating and mobility decisions require thoughtful clinical reasoning, proactive planning, and strong interdisciplinary collaboration. Participants will dive deep into the complex world of wheelchairs by engaging in hands-on trials of equipment and navigating complex case studies that walk through the key components of a comprehensive wheelchair evaluation, including assessment of strength, endurance, spasticity, posture, cognition, and quality of life. Faculty will demonstrate how these findings translate into mobility recommendations across the continuum—from manual wheelchairs to power mobility, and even more complex seating and mobility rehabilitation technology. The session will also address common clinical challenges, including navigating insurance and documentation requirements, collaborating effectively with durable medical equipment vendors, and facilitating productive conversations with patients who may be hesitant about wheelchair use with a focus on framing advanced mobility from a wellness based perspective as a tool for participation, safety, and quality of life rather than loss of independence. By the end of the session, participants will leave with a concrete understanding of available seating and mobility equipment, required documentation, and communication tools that can be immediately applied in clinical practice to support patient centered wheelchair decision making in MS care.
