Does Your Clinic Have a Dietitian Gap?
Chair: Mona D Bostick, RDN, LDN, MSCS (Food Matters 365, LLC)
Including Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) on the MS care team increases patient safety, patient satisfaction, and improved health outcomes. Nutrition is one of the foundations of health, and other members of the team lack time and knowledge to adequately address the need. This presentation will review some benefits of including RDNs on the interdisciplinary care team. People living with MS have a lot of questions about diet. The need for support and guidance beyond providing a nutrition handout is significant. RDNs are uniquely qualified to assess nutrition status, recommend evidence-based interventions, monitor and evaluate understanding and progress, and provide support for behavior change when warranted. RDNs can educate about the safety and/or efficacy of complementary or alternative nutrition modalities. While the evidence is lacking to warrant the adoption of a specific eating pattern for people living with MS, there is a growing consensus suggesting comorbidities have a significant impact on health outcomes in MS. RDNs can help to improve health outcomes by counseling patients on the role of food in managing or preventing comorbidities. Level of information: Beginner, Intermediate
