Current Topics and Trends in MS Rehab Part 4
Moderator: Patricia Bobryk, MHS,PT,MSCS,ATP (NMSS)
1) Interpretation and Understanding Non-Pharmaceutical Clinical Research Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a multifarious, chronic disease of the central nervous system, resulting in heterogenous neurologic symptoms and progressive disability spanning multiple physiological and psychological domains. The complexity of these manifestations presents unique challenges to the construction of rehab clinical research methodology, including the development and selection of outcome measures. This Current Topics and Trends in MS Rehab session aims to bring to light different types of outcome measures so that session attendees can gain knowledge of commonly used outcomes and innovative measures in MS rehab-related clinical research. Level of Information: Intermediate 2) Telehealth for Long-Term Physical and Psychosocial Management in MS: A Data Driven and Evidence-Informed Approach Despite the recognized benefits of exercise in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), participation has been low due to inappropriate healthcare advice, lack of an exercise community, and personal or technical barriers such as distance or lack of time. Telehealth provides a suitable option to address the exercise participation barriers in individuals with MS. The coronavirus-19 pandemic created an urgent need for the MS Physical Therapy and Wellness Center in Provo, Utah to develop a unique telehealth-based alternative care model to address the physical and psychosocial challenges faced by individuals with MS. Till date, only a few studies have examined the short-term effects of telehealth on physical and psychosocial outcomes in MS which can potentially limit our knowledge of the long-term (>1 year) training effects. This session will begin by describing the intricacies of development and implementation of a client-oriented, data-driven, and evidence-informed telehealth group exercise program in MS. Through lecture, examples, and longitudinal quantitative and qualitative data, the presenters will discuss the effectiveness and need for continuous quality assessment of various telehealth care models. After this session, the audience will gain an informative framework of telehealth implementation designed to evoke long-term benefits in MS and other chronic conditions and enhance value-based clinical practice.
